Finding Obituaries

The Mobile Register online

11/1992-Current, 10/01 to 1/10/03 unavailable

The database of Mobile Register (opens in a new window) lags about a month and doesn't index all the obits and death notices.

  1. Click the "Start Search" button
  2. Click the "Customized" tab
  3. Search for Enter the last name of the person (we have had problems trying to enter a full name when the newspaper doesn't match the presence or absence of middle names for example). Leave the "in all text" option as is.
  4. Deaths or Obits in the second field and also change "in all text" to Index Term
  5. and the time range at Limit search by date.

NB From Sarah:

The paid obits, the ones submitted by the funeral homes and usually on the left side, are NOT on Newsbank. Only the "news" obits put in by the Register are on Newsbank. Everyone does NOT get a "news" obit, only "important" people and those who have missed the deadline for funeral home submission. The old Mobile Press obits, from the days we still had 2 papers, are not there either. They are only putting the Register online.

Other Sources

The last two weeks of the Mobile Register (and Montgomery, Birmingham and Huntsville papers) are available at http://al.com (opens in a new window)

On the home page, under the button "News + Biz", there are two options to check: News Obituaries (opens in a new window) and Death Notices (opens in a new window). The Death Notices has two sections to search.
